At the end of his life, Henri Matisseoes deteriorating health forced him to lay down his paintbrushes and take up his scissors to continue to create. That is how a famous series of collages came to life. The Snail from 1953 is part of this series. The artist resolves the eternal conflict between drawing and colour: with one action, collage, he brings the two together. The use of pairs of complementary colours (including red/green and orange/blue) makes them even more vibrant, hence the subtitle The Chromatic Composition.
